Partnership means working as an alliance of equals

Partnership is the final pillar of this report, and it represents far more than collaboration. In Wandsworth, partnership means working as an alliance of equals—bringing together the strengths of community organisations, residents, health partners, and the council to achieve shared goals for health equity. The successes highlighted throughout this report are rooted in the recognition that the insight, reach, and lived experience held within communities stand on equal footing with the statutory responsibilities of local government. Together, we are moving beyond transactional relationships to build genuinely interdependent alliances that drive long-term change.

This approach places community leadership at the heart of transformation. Trusted local groups bring authenticity, cultural understanding, and deep-rooted relationships that ensure the voices of residents' shape decisions and influence the design of services. Alongside the council’s statutory authority and the expertise of NHS partners, these contributions create a partnership model that is resilient, innovative, and grounded in real life.

Equity in Action: Shared Leadership

Some of the most transformative work in Wandsworth has emerged where communities and statutory partners have come together to co-design and deliver services, addressing gaps that formal systems cannot fill alone. One example is the work to increase cervical cancer screening among South Asian women. This partnership—bringing together Wandsworth Care Alliance, NHS South West London Integrated Care Board, the council, RM Partners, the Institute for Voluntary Action Research, and local primary care teams—focused on understanding the barriers that prevent women from attending screening and exploring what needs to change to support better engagement. By creating space for honest conversations, listening to lived experience, and unpacking cultural, practical, and emotional factors, the project generated insights that will shape future approaches and help ensure screening uptake improves where it is needed most.

Another powerful example is the Perinatal Mental Health Experience project, led by Wandsworth Care Alliance and Healthwatch Wandsworth. This work responds directly to the complex mental health needs of new and expectant parents. By drawing on lived experience and offering non-stigmatising, peer-led support, the project has created pathways that are more compassionate and effective than clinical referrals alone. Families who may have disengaged from formal services have instead been met with understanding, continuity, and timely support during one of the most vulnerable periods of life.

These examples show what becomes possible when partnership is truly equitable. When community insight and statutory authority work side by side, we achieve outcomes—such as increased screening rates, improved mental health support, and stronger family resilience—that would not be possible through traditional service models alone.

The community sector remains an indispensable engine for health transformation in Wandsworth, and by continuing to work together as equal partners, we can build a borough where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
