Since launching our ambitious 10-year improvement programme to transform our roads and pavements in February 2024, we’ve more than doubled our annual investment from £4.6 million in 2023/2024 to a record-investment of £10.25 million this past year. This is part of our Decade of Renewal programme, which is upgrading roads and pavements, but also building 1,000 new council homes, improving bridges, and investing in a cleaner, green borough.
Our £10.25 million investment makes it one of the biggest resurfacing programmes of any borough in London, and this extra investment is paid for by funds the council collects and manages from property developers.
By April 2026, we will have completed extensive works, including:
- Resurfaced more than 14.7 kilometres of road, which is equal to the length of about 140 football pitches.
- Refurbished over 27.2 kilometres of pavement, which is equal to the length of approximately 259 football pitches.
- Replaced or repaired approximately 1,000 street name signs, including 400 heritage plates.
- Repaired over 500 streetlights.
- Completed road marking on all classified roads, known as A and B roads.
- Repaired 1,140 potholes, with 100% of dangerous potholes fixed within 7 days of being reported as part of our 7 rings, 7 days guarantee.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:
“This record investment is making a real difference to our neighbourhoods. Our Decade of Renewal is delivering safer, smoother, and more accessible streets for everyone.
“Since 2024, we have more than doubled our annual investment in refurbishing roads and pavements. By April, substantial upgrades will have been completed across the borough, from major resurfacing and pavement repairs to dangerous fixing potholes within 7 days of them being reported.
“We won’t stop here – we're only two years into a ten-year programme, and this sustained investment will be creating long-lasting benefits for our borough for years to come.”
What else are we investing in as part of our Decade of Renewal?
The Decade of Renewal is about more than roads. It includes:
- Building 1,000 new council homes for local families as part of our ambitious Homes for Wandsworth programme - we have surpassed the halfway point, completing the 500th home in October 2025.
- Achieving a carbon neutral council by 2030.
- Creating cleaner, greener, and safer neighbourhoods through our Cleaner Borough Plan and Future Streets Strategy.
- Improving 12 railway bridges and underpasses across the borough to make them brighter, safer and more welcoming.
