A community-led approach to Prevention

Effective prevention is central to building a resilient, healthy Wandsworth. It is about taking action early, reducing risks, and creating the foundations for long-term wellbeing. This report highlights the growing shift towards prevention being led by the people and partners who know our communities best. Their deep local insight and trusted relationships enable them to reach residents earlier and more meaningfully than formal systems alone.

Our focus is on recognising and amplifying the power of community-led prevention—approaches that support holistic wellbeing, strengthen confidence, and help residents stay well for longer.

Prevention in Practice

Across the borough, prevention is being transformed through the creativity, leadership, and lived experience of local groups and residents:

Pioneering early intervention:

Many community-based initiatives are the first point of contact for residents who may be vulnerable or isolated. Their early support prevents challenges from escalating into crises, particularly in areas such as mental wellbeing and social isolation, where trusted relationships are essential.

Building health skills for independence:

Projects such as those delivered by Share Community show how prevention can empower people directly. By supporting learning disabled residents to develop skills like preparing healthy, nutritious meals, these initiatives build independence, confidence, and long-term health literacy.

Tackling complex challenges with cultural insight:

Addressing issues such as childhood obesity requires approaches that include those that are culturally informed and grounded in trust. In Wandsworth, this is being achieved through close collaboration between families, local networks, and partners including Elays Network, Wandsworth Care Alliance, the Council’s Public Health team, and Live Karma Yoga. Together, they co-design interventions that reflect lived realities, ensuring health messages resonate and lead to lasting change for children and families.

Promoting wellness in local spaces:

Partnerships with organisations such as Enable demonstrate how local spaces can become catalysts for wellbeing. By activating parks, leisure centres, and community venues, these programmes make physical activity, social connection, and mental resilience accessible to all.

Culturally appropriate healthy eating:

Initiatives like those developed by Rackets Cubed show how insight can be translated into action. By designing healthy eating programmes that are culturally appropriate and relevant, they ensure nutrition education is meaningful and embraced across diverse communities.

Case Studies

These case studies prove that community organisations are the equal partners in designing and delivering the prevention agenda. By continuing to invest in their capacity, embed their insights into decision-making, and acknowledge their leadership, we move towards a Wandsworth where health challenges are anticipated, and community-led resilience is our most effective defence.
