People Case Study

Wandsworth Women and Girls Working Group

Project Summary

The Women and Girls Group brought together residents, community organisations and council partners to co‑design a bold, practical plan to increase participation by women and girls in sport and physical activity across Wandsworth.

Rooted in lived experience and local insight, the group set out to understand barriers, celebrate what already works, and shape a shared vision for more inclusive, accessible and empowering opportunities. Over six months, the group built momentum, strengthened relationships and championed women’s voices.

Impact and Outcomes

A targeted action plan to drive change:

A clear, evidence‑informed plan now guides efforts to boost participation, volunteering, coaching and leadership among women and girls.

Stronger understanding of what works:

The group identified existing strengths, successful local practice and areas where additional support or intervention is needed.

Alignment with borough‑wide strategies:

The work is now embedded within wider council priorities, supporting long‑term sustainability and system‑wide impact.

Enhanced partnerships and community connections:

The process strengthened relationships between the council, community groups and local residents, creating a more unified approach to supporting women and girls.

Closing the gender gap in an already active borough:

Wandsworth is one of London’s most active boroughs, with female activity levels above the national average. This initiative builds on that strength, helping to create fair, inclusive and equitable opportunities for all women and girls to be active.

Community Voice:

"I understand deeply how physical activity is not just about the body—it touches every part of our being: mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychological. That’s why I joined the women and girls group—not just to support others, but to honour the holistic power of movement."Josephine Mantey, AGOE Empowerment Network
