Wellness with Elays: Muslim women wellness project
Project Summary
In response to the lack of accessible, affordable and culturally comfortable physical activity spaces for local women, we worked closely with our service users and the wider community to co‑design Wellness with Elays - a women‑only holistic wellness programme launched in June 2021 with support from Wandsworth council Public Health.
The project was created to meet the specific health and wellbeing needs of Muslim women, offering a safe, culturally informed environment where they can build confidence, improve their physical and mental health, and access practical education that supports them to take control of their wellbeing. Through community‑led design and trusted delivery, the programme empowers women to prioritise their health on their own terms.

Key Activities
Culturally appropriate wellness sessions
Free sessions take place every Tuesday and Friday, led by Muslim women who share the community’s language and cultural background. These classes create a safe, welcoming space for women to build confidence, improve physical health and prioritise their wellbeing.
Fortnightly wellbeing talking circles
Introduced in 2024, these group conversations explore topics such as self-care, mental health, tackling social isolation and building healthier relationships. The sessions encourage open dialogue, peer support and stronger community connections.
Impact and Outcomes
Increased levels of physical activity:
in the women who attended regularly.
Reduced feelings of anxiety:
and worry due to social isolation – women felt like they had ‘something of our own’ – a sense of belonging.
Increased confidence:
to talk to GP and other healthcare providers about ailments and worries
Community Voice:
What our communities said

“After our discussions, especially on self-care and mental health, I see so many of my friends struggling, they are always worried, and I know the fact that they do not take care of themselves too is making their mental health worse. These conversations helped me understand so much about myself and our communities”
