Wandsworth is building 113 new homes for council rent on Garratt Lane as part of the redevelopment of the Atheldene site, following the opening of a brand-new health centre there.

The development is one of a string of affordable council housing schemes currently underway or nearing completion, including homes in Arnal Crescent, Wandsworth, Aubyn and Toland Squares in Roehampton and the Alders Garages in Tooting.

The borough's two major regeneration projects will also provide many hundreds of new homes, guided by masterplans shaped with residents and local communities. At the Winstanley and York Road estates in Battersea, more than 125 homes will be built next to the former Pennethorne House site. While on the Alton estate in Roehampton, the demolition of the long-derelict Block A is paving the way for new homes and community spaces.

As part of a commitment to delivering a wide range of new homes for local people, the council has reset its relationship with developers, partners and external investors.  It has sent a clear signal that it will work collaboratively with the private sector to bring forward new development schemes that also deliver for local communities.

As well as building new homes, work has started on driving up standards in existing council homes.

A new Housing Directorate led by an Executive Director will focus on improving Wandsworth’s housing management and landlord services, as well as strengthening homelessness prevention, temporary accommodation and the delivery of new housing across the borough.

A key part of its work will be to oversee the Housing Improvement and Transformation Plan, part of the council’s pledge to give residents more of a voice in improving standards and performance in housing services.

More robust action is also being taken against anti-social behaviour in housing blocks. Recently a tenant on the Lennox Estate was evicted following a campaign of harassment against a neighbour.

Cabinet Member for Housing Cllr Matthew Corner said: “A safe, secure and high-quality home is the foundation for a good life.

Through our ambitious housing and regeneration programme we’re delivering a range of different types of housing to meet the needs of residents at every stage of their lives, from private ownership to affordable housing.

“We’ll give tenants and leaseholders a voice and make sure they live in safe, well-maintained homes.”
