Homes for Wandsworth is delivering 1,000 new council homes for rent, tackling the housing shortage and providing local families in overcrowded or temporary accommodation the chance to move into a secure, permanent home.
The new homes at Springfield Village were celebrated at the ‘topping out’ ceremony earlier this week, which marks the final bricks being laid to complete the structure of the new development. The project will deliver 54 supported homes for the community, helping vulnerable adults to live independently, including 21 which will be fully wheelchair accessible.
The new homes will benefit from high-quality amenities and is set amongst the sprawling Springfield Park, the largest park opened in London since the 2012 Olympics. The new green space has been designed to support health, wellbeing and increase biodiversity, and is home to a pavilion café, play areas, trails, an amphitheatre, and informal sports areas.
Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health, said: “Marking this milestone at Springfield Village is about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about creating homes and a supportive community that give residents the independence and security they deserve.
“By delivering supported living in partnership with London Square, we’re ensuring that people with additional needs can thrive in a safe, inclusive community, surrounded by green space and world-class facilities. These homes reflect our commitment to health, wellbeing, and opportunity for every resident in Wandsworth.”
The vibrant new community is constructed alongside Springfield University Hospital and was developed in partnership with the NHS, with the latest phase led by London Square – a specialist property development company focused on London.
Sean Gavin, Managing Director, South at London Square, added: "London Square are proud to be part of the regeneration of Springfield Hospital alongside STEP and Wandsworth Council.
"We are delighted to be at this stage of construction delivering in partnership with Wandsworth Homes this much needed tenure for the borough.
"The design and specification of these homes have been undertaken with Wandsworth’s delivery teams and we all very much looking forward to welcoming the first residents next year."
The development is another step forward in our Homes for Wandsworth programme, which has recently celebrated its 500th completed home, marking the halfway point in our commitment to build 1,000 high-quality council homes for local residents.
This follows the recent announcement of 200 high-quality council homes being built by Battersea Power Station in partnership with Wandsworth Council - highlighting the council’s commitment to delivering high-quality, well-designed homes for social rent. This milestone marks a significant step in tackling the housing crisis and creating mixed, balanced communities across the borough.
