In response to feedback from local communities, we've installed improved lighting, colourful murals, jet-washed and deep-cleaned underpasses and enhanced the pigeon-proofing on a range of rail bridges in different town centres and local neighbourhoods, creating brighter, safer and more welcoming routes.
The improvements are part of the council’s Decade of Renewal, paid for with funding the council has collected from property developers, not local taxpayers. They've been carried out in partnership with Network Rail.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Residents told us that dark, unwelcoming bridges and underpasses make their everyday journeys feel unsafe, so we’ve responded with a fantastic programme of bridge improvements that are making a real difference.
"These improvements are transforming routes in town centres and neighbourhoods right across Wandsworth, making them brighter, safer and more pleasant to use as we build a borough people can feel proud of.”
Swandon Way: Wandsworth Town’s colourful new gateway
The Swandon Way rail bridge has been transformed with new painted murals showing local icons and historical landmarks, enhanced lighting, fresh paintwork and bold ‘Wandsworth Town’ lettering on the facades, creating a cleaner and more welcoming route through the town centre.

Balham: brighter Bedford Hill foot tunnels
In Balham, the once dark Bedford Hill pedestrian tunnels have been transformed with bright and bold new artwork, lighting repairs and railing planters, turning this route into a more attractive route and landmark for pedestrians.
The project follows recent improvement works at Balham High Road rail bridge, where deep‑cleaning, enhanced lighting and pigeon‑proofing have already made a noticeable difference for pedestrians and motorists in the town centre.

The Causeway: Lighter, brighter tunnel
The Causeway rail underpass on Wandsworth’s riverside has been improved with deep cleaning, enhanced lighting, a re-paint and new planting to create a brighter and safer route for pedestrians and cyclists.
Battersea Park Road bridges: new lighting and repaired brickwork
Two rail bridges outside Battersea Park Station have had weeks of improvement works including deep cleaning, repairs to the original brickwork and brighter, programmable new lighting.
Falcon Bridge: new landmark for Clapham Junction
The council made major improvements to Falcon Road rail bridge as part of Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture.
In the borough’s most significant rail bridge upgrade, the underpass was redesigned with new paintwork, artistic wall cladding based on community‑informed designs, pigeon-proofing, landscaping, and upgraded lighting and CCTV, transforming it from a dark thoroughfare into a vibrant landmark and much safer route for Clapham Junction.
East Putney: cleaner and brighter rail bridges
Outside East Putney station, works are progressing on lighting upgrades, deep cleaning and repainting to improve this key travel route and town centre gateway. Find out more about East Putney bridges
Tooting Bec Common: bridges artwork coming soon
Two dingy rail underpasses near Tooting Triangle playground and Cavendish Road are set to benefit from improvements including cleaning, landscaping, better lighting and installation of community-led artwork following consultation with local residents and community groups.
