Residents and commuters in Battersea are now benefiting from the council’s latest improvements to rail bridges as new lighting has been switched on under two bridges crossing Battersea Park Road, making the area cleaner, brighter and safer for people passing through.

Located just outside Battersea Park station, these two bridges are the latest to be improved as part of Wandsworth Council’s Decade of Renewal, with improvement works paid for using funds the council collects from property developers in the borough, not local taxpayers.

Working in partnership with Network Rail, the bricks and underpasses have been deep‑cleaned, with repairs to brickwork and improved pigeon‑proofing added. The new programmable lighting now brightens up the route to make it feel more welcoming and safer, responding directly to feedback from residents about cleanliness and dark railway underpasses.

The Battersea Park Road bridges are the latest locations to benefit from a borough‑wide programme of rail bridge and underpass improvements being delivered in town centres and neighbourhoods as part of the council’s long‑term investment in local infrastructure.

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "One by one, we're renewing bridges, roads and streets across our borough in response to feedback from residents who want cleaner, brighter and safer neighbourhoods. Our Decade of Renewal is being boosted by funding from developers so that we can deliver even more improvements with longer term benefits."

Building on wider improvements

The upgrade of Battersea Park Road’s bridges is the latest in a series of recently completed bridge works across the borough.

In Balham, the rail underpass on Balham High Road has been transformed with improved architectural lighting, deep cleaning and enhanced pigeon‑proofing, creating a brighter and more pleasant route for pedestrians and shoppers near the station in response to residents’ requests received through engagement events including the council’s Balham Forum and community drop-in events [insert link].

Major improvements were also completed in December at Falcon Road rail bridge in Clapham Junction, where new programmable lighting, vibrant artwork, enhanced pigeon‑proofing and additional CCTV have helped change a previously dark and unwelcoming route into a safer and more attractive gateway through the town centre.

More bridges being improved across Wandsworth

Work is continuing at several other rail bridges and underpasses across the borough as part of the same programme.

These include:

  • Wandsworth Town's Swandon Way rail bridge where new lighting and artwork are being installed
  • new lighting under The Causeway bridge in Wandsworth Town
  • and Balham's Bedford Hill pedestrian tunnels which are being upgraded with improved lighting and new artwork.

Community engagement is also underway to inform improvements to two rail underpasses in the Tooting Bec Common area - at Cavendish Road and Tooting Triangle playground.

The programme is part of a wider initiative to renew streets, pavements, infrastructure and neighbourhoods across Wandsworth, boosted by funding the council collects from property developers in the borough. The works are helping to make everyday routes feel safer and more welcoming while also making long-term improvements for the future of the borough.
