Residents will soon be able to request electric vehicle (EV) charging cable channels in front of their homes to make EV ownership more accessible.

These channels provide a safe and convenient way for EV owners without private driveways to run a charging cable between their home and their vehicle without creating an obstruction on the pavement. With funding from the Department for Transport (DfT), the council will be able to offer a £1,000 grant for the installation of each EV charging cable, significantly lowering the cost.

Through this initiative, the council aims to support even more residents who want to switch to cleaner, low-emission transport. It provides an additional option to the 1,600 charging points already provided on street for public use.

How will it work?

When the scheme launches next month, residents who are interested in having a cross-pavement EV charger installed outside their property will need to submit an online application and pay a non-refundable application fee of £100.

Each request will be assessed against a set of criteria, including footway width, safety requirements and location suitability. Residents are encouraged to review the terms and conditions carefully when the scheme is launched, as not every property will be suitable for an EV cable channel.

If the location is approved, installation will take place once the £250 installation fee and the renewable licence fee (£150 for a three‑year period) have been paid. The installation fee has been reduced from £1,250 to £250 through a £1,000 DfT grant applied to each application, making the scheme more affordable for residents.

The council will own and maintain the cable channel while the resident will be responsible for installing and maintaining a dedicated EV chargepoint at their home.

The scheme is being supported by a £175,780 overall grant from the DfT.

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This initiative is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improve EV infrastructure and support more sustainable travel. By enabling safe home charging for electric vehicles, we’re helping to remove one of the barriers for people looking to make the switch.”
