Bessborough Road

The site provides the first new homes for residents in the Alton regeneration scheme. Initial ideas were presented to residents in September 2017 with the proposal receiving planning permission on 26 June 2018.

The site is located near the junction of Peterfield Rise with Bessborough Road and was previously the location of a small car park area and Sherwood Lodge. Works began on site in September 2019 and were completed in autumn 2021.

The block has been called 'McKinney House' after the former vicar of Holy Trinity Church in Roehampton, the late Rev. Jim McKinney; and was formally opened by his two children on 15 October 2021. Read the article.

The proposal

The development at Bessborough Road will deliver ten new council homes for existing residents, consisting of:

  • Five three-bed maisonettes
  • Two three-bed flats
  • Three two-bed flats over three storeys with a fourth storey set back in height

Each home will have access to either a private garden or balcony. The properties will be a mixture of shared equity and council rent homes to meet the needs of the residents that will move in. All the new homes will be fully adaptable to meet the mobility needs of residents, whilst one of the maisonettes has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of wheelchair users.

The proposal will also offer:

  • Five parking spaces, one of which has been designed for a wheelchair user, and an electric car charging point
  • A safe play area for younger children accessible to all homes
  • Securely designated communal bike and bin storage areas provided externally within the site
  • Environmental works to the pavement and landscape immediately adjacent to the retail parade on Petersfield Rise.

 Example Floor Plans

Three-bed maisonettes

There will be five three-bedroom maisonettes on the ground floor, individually accessed via their own front doors through a front garden. The maisonettes will be very similar to a traditional two storey home with a private front and rear garden. The overall area will meet or exceed the minimum requirements of current planning standards and include over 3m2 of storage area.

The floor plan blow demonstrates that all rooms can accommodate a normal selection of furniture and an allowance is made for bikes to be stored in the garden or the shared bike store at the rear. One of these maisonettes will be designed to wheelchair standards, with a larger area to ensure that anyone using a wheelchair or mobility aid will be able to move around and use all the parts of the home.

All living rooms and bedrooms will be well ventilated, well lit, with views towards ether the rear gardens or the green open space along Bessborough Road.

Three-bed flats

There will be two three-bedroom flats for 5 people of which the layout below is an example. The areas of the flats will allow for normal furniture layouts and have at least 3m2 of storage. The flats are situated on the second or third floor and will be accessed from secured and shared common stairs and deckway. Each individual flat will have a private entrance.

All three-bedroom flats will have either a large external inset balcony or a roof terrace with a minimum area of 15m2. All living rooms and bedrooms will be well ventilated, well lit, with views towards either the rear gardens or the green open space along Bessborough Road.

Two-bed flats

There will be three two-bedroom flats for either three or four people. The flats are situated on the second or  third floor and will be accessed from secured and shared common stairs and deckway. Each individual flat will have a private entrance. The floor plans below allow for normal furniture layouts and have at least 2 to 2.5m2 of storage, depending on type stairs and deckway.

All two-bedroom flats will have either a large external inset balcony or a roof terrace with a minimum area of 10m2. All living rooms and bedrooms will be well ventilated, well lit, with views towards either the rear gardens or the green open space along Bessborough Road.
