Housing options for retired and older people

There is a range of retirement housing options available that caters for different incomes, care needs (including extra care) and support needs.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing, also known as retirement housing, is ideal for people over 55 who want to live in comfort and security but keep a level of independence. So, you’ll still be in charge of your own home, cooking, managing bills and looking after any medication. Properties are usually self-contained, purpose-built flats.

Extra care or nursing

If you want extra care or nursing and residential care contact the adult access team 020 8871 7707 or email adultsocialservices@wandsworth.gov.uk. To find out more, read our extra care leaflet.

Seaside and Country Homes

The Seaside and Country Homes Scheme offers the chance of moving to the countryside or coastal regions of southern England. You can apply online.

You might want to think about buying a smaller retirement home that is easier to look after, whilst reducing your utility bills and but with the benefit of a community setting.
