About the scheme
The Healthier Catering Commitment (HCC) is a voluntary scheme run by London boroughs with support from the Mayor of London and the Association of Environmental Health Managers (ALEHM).
The scheme recognises businesses in London that demonstrate a commitment to providing healthier food options by reducing the levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat in food sold in their premises.
Benefits to your businesses
The scheme is free and includes the following benefits:
- All businesses who receive the award will be listed on our website
- Free Level 2 Food Safety Training (via NCASS)
- Promotional support on the HCC website
- Window sticker and certificate to display your commitment
- Positive recognition from customers and the community
Who can apply
Whether you run a café, takeaway, restaurant, or mobile food unit, the HCC is a fantastic way to show your commitment to healthier living.
To be eligible, your business must:
- Have a Food Hygiene Rating of three or above
- Commit to delivering at least eight out of 25 criteria, including these four essential criteria:
- Use healthier oils (such as rapeseed or sunflower)
- Avoid adding salt to dishes after cooking (allow customers to add their own)
- Promote water and low sugar drinks
- Offer smaller portion sizes for adults and children

Additional criteria apply for businesses that fry food, such as:
- Maintaining oil quality
- Draining excess fat
- Frying food at the optimum temperature of between 175°C and 190°C
