Benefits of quitting
Giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, wellbeing and finances. No matter how long you've smoked, the benefits begin almost immediately.
By quitting smoking, you will:
- Reduce your risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, lung disease and cancer.
- Save money by no longer spending it on cigarettes. Use the NHS Quit Smoking Calculator to find out how much you could save.
- Improve your quality of life with more energy, easier breathing, and better taste and smell.
What you can expect after quitting:
- After 20 minutes: Your heart rate and blood pressure begin to return to normal.
- After 48 hours: Your sense of taste and smell start to improve.
- After 2 to 12 weeks: Your circulation and lung function improve.
- After 1 to 9 months: You'll cough less and feel less short of breath.
- After 1 year: Your risk of heart disease is around half that of someone who continues to smoke.
Every smoke-free day helps you build a healthier future for yourself and those around you.
- Protect your family and others around you from second-hand smoke, which can cause serious harm to their health. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of second-hand smoke.

Vaping to quit smoking
If you are an adult who smokes, a nicotine vape may be one of the options available to help you quit.
Evidence to date shows that vaping can be an effective tool for stopping smoking. It is not risk-free and is not recommended for children, young people under 18 or people who do not smoke cigarettes.
Our Stop Smoking Service can advise you on whether vaping is a suitable option for you and provide support to help you stop smoking completely.
Local support sessions
In person stop smoking support is available at St George's and Queen Mary’s Hospital by appointment. In-patients and out-patients can call 020 8725 4234 to find out more or arrange support.
Our Stop Smoking Advisors also attend Health Bus and community health pop-up events across Wandsworth. These sessions do not require an appointment - residents can simply drop in.
