Railway bridge improvement works

We are improving railway bridges and underpasses across the borough to make them brighter, safer and more welcoming to use.

Planned works to create better routes for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic include:

  • Upgrading lighting
  • Cleaning up and jet-washing underpasses
  • Commissioning public art
  • Installing pigeon-proofing

Falcon Road rail bridge

The 100m-long Falcon Road underpass passes under the railway tracks cutting through the heart of Clapham Junction town centre. In partnership with Network Rail, the bridge and underpass have been transformed with new lighting, pigeon-proofing and artwork panelling on the walls.

The artwork celebrates local landmarks using murals and community-focused art, creating a vibrant and inclusive community landmark, paid for with funding we collected from property developers.

The improvement project was completed in December 2025 during Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture.

More bridge improvements

The rail bridge at Balham station on Balham High Road was also completed in December 2025 with jet-washing and enhanced lighting for the underpass.

Improvements are being made to more bridges in Tooting, Balham, Battersea, Putney and Wandsworth Town this spring.

In Wandsworth Town, Swandon Way rail bridge is being improved with cleaning, painting, enhanced lighting, a colourful mural on the walls and ‘Wandsworth Town’ lettering on each façade.

The two rail bridges outside Battersea Park Station are being spruced up with deep-cleaning, re-pointing of the brickwork, pigeon-proofing and new lighting to make the underpasses brighter and more attractive to use.

In East Putney, two bridges next to the station are getting a deep-clean, re-pointed brickwork, better pigeon-proofing and a colourful paint design with lettering at each end.

The two foot tunnels under the rail bridge on Bedford Hill, Balham, will be cleaned and prepared for the installation of enhanced lighting and colourful artwork along the tunnel walls.

In response to community feedback in Tooting, the two rail underpasses at Cavendish Road and Tooting Triangle will be treated with pigeon-proofing, new paintwork and cleaning. Community engagement is now underway to inform the choice of artwork on the walls.
