At Wandle Recreation Centre a range of cutting-edge equipment and technology has been installed to make fitness more accessible and remove barriers to physical activity. This includes the installation of air-powered resistance equipment to support beginners, older residents and those managing injury or long-term health conditions to enjoy low-impact exercise as well as the use of state-of-the-art technology to help fitness suite-users develop personalised workouts and track progress over time.
The upgraded gym sits at the heart of a wider transformation of the centre, which includes incorporating social prescribing and the co-location of services to create a wellbeing hub.
Meanwhile, on the Alton Estate, Roehampton Sports and Fitness Centre has benefited from a complete fitness suite refurbishment, with a range of brand new machines as well as redecorated spaces and improvements to air-handling systems, creating a brighter, more modern environment for members.
The projects are part of Wandsworth Council's commitment to helping residents lead healthier, more active lives through the Wandsworth Moves Together strategy and ensuring leisure facilities remain welcoming, accessible and fit for the future.
Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We want every resident to have access to high-quality places where they can get active and improve their health and wellbeing."
"The new fitness suites at Wandle Recreation Centre and Roehampton Sports and Fitness Centre are fantastic examples of how facilities are being modernised across the borough. Whether you're taking your first steps into fitness or training regularly, these upgraded spaces will help more people move more and feel better."
The upgrades follow the completion of upgrades at Battersea Leisure Centre and Latchmere Leisure Centre earlier this year.
The investment programme will continue over the coming years, with further improvements planned across leisure centres in Wandsworth. Together with Places Leisure, the council is investing more than £24 million to modernise facilities, improve accessibility and create welcoming spaces that support health and wellbeing for residents of all ages.
