Wandsworth Council sets out plans for major investment to clean up streets and crack down on fly-tipping

The investment will boost the council’s ability to deliver visible, practical improvements across the borough, including an expanded planned jet washing programme, more rapid responses to resident reports on graffiti and fly-tipping and targeted action in areas where streets need the most attention.

As part of the package, two additional jet washing vehicles will be added to Wandsworth’s existing service, street sweeping will increase from twice weekly to daily on selected high-footfall roads, adding to the existing programme of cleaning high streets multiple times a day. Fox-proof food caddies will also be trialled in targeted areas to try and avoid scavenging and mess between collections.

The council will also step up enforcement activity, including using stencils in fly-tipping hotspots to warn offenders about the fines they face, as well as developing a multi-year strategy focused on preventing fly-tipping, and tackling the issue at source.

Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

"We're dedicated to getting the basics right. Residents want clean streets, well-maintained neighbourhoods and visible action when issues are reported. Streets need cleaning and that's what we're here to do."

The plans for investment forms part of Wandsworth's wider commitment to cleaner neighbourhoods, ensuring council services focus on the things that matter most to residents and making sure we’re delivering better basics.

The plans for further investment in street cleaning will go before the Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee for scrutiny prior to implementation.
