Under new plans to tackle overrunning roadworks and get Wandsworth moving again, the council is proposing to crack down on utilities companies disrupting our roads.

A proposed Lane Rental Scheme will charge a daily fee for all road works, based on the traffic sensitivity of each road included in the scheme, and fine companies when roadworks overrun.
In support of this, we've opened a consultation for residents and businesses to share their thoughts on the proposed scheme.
If approved by the Department for Transport, all utilities and other companies carrying out works on highways would need to book a time and space slot to carry out works.
Through the proposed charge, those carrying out roadworks would be encouraged to do so at times that are less busy, complete works within a quicker time frame, or find alternative ways to reduce charges such as collaborating with other companies planning to carry out works too.
Cllr Nick Austin, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "Roadworks within the borough cause disruption for residents and businesses, so we want to reduce traffic congestion in our borough and hold utility companies to account.
"We want to know your thoughts on what this proposal means for you, so we can take them into account."

The consultation closes on 13 November 2026. We want to hear from residents and businesses with their views, including any potential impacts, benefits, concerns and implementation considerations.
