Residents urged to check eligibility for Council Tax Reduction

Residents may be eligible to apply for a Council Tax Reduction under the Council’s local scheme.

The Council will be sending letters out to residents who may be eligible.
Council Tax Reduction is to help people who are on a low income to pay part or all of their Council Tax and the amount of reduction you get depends on your status and how much Council Tax you pay.
You have to apply to us for Council Tax Reduction; you do not receive it automatically.
Council Tax Reduction Award process
If you qualify for Council Tax Reduction this will be paid into your Council Tax account reducing the amount you have to pay. Once your award is worked out, we will send you a new Council Tax bill.
Who qualifies for a reduction
To qualify for Council Tax Reduction, you must be:
- On a low income
- Responsible for the Council Tax payment on your address
You can claim Council Tax Reduction whether you are working, unemployed, disabled, single, married etc. However, there may be some exceptions to this, for example:
- You have come to live in the UK from abroad and have restrictions on your status
- You are a full-time student
- You live in residential care or nursing home
- You are working age in receipt of income and have savings over £6,000
- You are working age with no earned income and have savings over £16,000
- You are pensioner age and have savings over £16,000
- You are working age, and your income is above the earned income caps
