This is the latest bridge in the borough to undergo renewal works, making it a brighter, lighter and safer route for all road users.
The underpass walls and roof were jet-washed before the base coat is painted on. ‘Wandsworth Town’ lettering will be installed at each end, with new lighting and a bright artwork mural painted on the walls and entrances. This mocked-up illustration below shows how a section of the mural will look when the walls are completed.
The works will make it a more welcoming underpass to travel through, responding to feedback from local residents and businesses who asked for better lighting, cleaner spaces and safer walking and cycling routes through the town centre.
The bridge renewal project is being paid for using funds the council has secured from property developers to improve the local area, at no cost to local taxpayers.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “Painting and lighting Swandon Way rail bridge is a big step forward in our work to improve the whole town centre while also making it a brighter and more welcoming landmark for people who live here. We’re looking forward to finishing all these improvements to make a real difference to people who live and work here.”
Wandsworth Town improvements
The council is delivering neighbourhood improvements across Wandsworth Town Centre, including transforming Old York Road with new paving, planting and public space improvements. Other work includes decluttering town centre pavements where there are obstructions, widening or improving footways by rotating bus shelters and improving lighting and the public realm along The Causeway and Swandon Way.
Major investment is also underway at Wandsworth Town Station, where a significant programme of upgrade works has begun to make the station more accessible and better connected to the town centre. Funded through a partnership between the council and Network Rail, the scheme will deliver a new second entrance and step-free access to all platforms, helping to improve journeys for residents, commuters and visitors. Together, these projects deliver a joined-up approach to improving movement, safety and the quality of public spaces across Wandsworth Town - linking transport investment with better lighting, cleaner and more attractive routes and streets.
