The works will make the area’s streets and public spaces cleaner, greener, safer and more welcoming for everyone who lives in, works in, or visits the area. The first major phase of works is being delivered this year:
- Pavement repairs along Mitcham Road to tackle uneven surfaces and water ponding,
- drainage improvements to reduce flooding,
- new and refurbished tree pits, with low-level planting to enhance greenery,
- jet washing and decluttering of Tooting Broadway and Amen Corner,
- upgraded street lighting to improve safety and visibility, including heritage-style lanterns,
- the introduction of ghost signs celebrating local history,
- collaboration with a small number of shop owners to upgrade the appearance of shop fronts,
- increased bin and cycle parking provision, and
- increased planting around Tooting Broadway

As a Listening Council, we heard what issues are important to the local community, and have taken action. These improvements are designed to support a more vibrant and accessible town centre.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "These improvements are about making Tooting a better place to live, work and visit. We’re investing in cleaner streets, safer crossings, greener spaces and a more attractive town centre, while celebrating the area’s unique character and heritage.
"The works are just one part of our Decade of Renewal, to improve our roads, pavements, and public realm, using financial contributions from property developers.”

What else is new?
Amen Corner will see a significant uplift, with new paving, kerb realignment, drainage upgrades and planting. Guardrails will be removed and replaced with new cycle parking, and the area will be jet washed and refreshed. We’re also exploring options for uplighting key buildings to create a more attractive gateway into Tooting. This will also help to create a more inviting and safer night-time environment, as residents have often told us that more street lighting is a key priority.
We’ve worked closely with local businesses, residents, and groups such as the Tooting Historical Society to shape the proposals. A new heritage trail celebrating Tooting’s rich cultural history is in development and will be launched as part of our year as The Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture 2025.
We’re also preparing for more substantial works in 2026/27. These include:
- Public realm upgrades at Church Lane and Bickersteth Road,
- new pedestrian crossings and traffic signals at key junctions,
- more lighting and planting improvements, and
- cycle lane improvements.

These longer-term projects are currently in the planning and consultation phase, with detailed designs being developed in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and local stakeholders.
This investment is part of our wider commitment to improving neighbourhoods across the borough, supported by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and contributions from developers through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). In March this year, we unlocked an additional £1.35m to accelerate local improvements across Wandsworth.
