Sport and leisure
Wandsworth Council is ambitious about giving everyone in the borough access to sport and leisure, having recently launched Britain’s best concession scheme to make leisure activities affordable for all. Approval to award a new leisure contract was agreed for the management of the borough’s leisure facilities, and the contract will include a significant investment into leisure centres to ensure we’re offering our residents best in class services.
Improvements include the refurbishment of spaces within several of the borough’s fantastic leisure and sport centres, as well as the launch of a new Active Communities programme to encourage residents not currently active to move more. This will involve delivering activities outside of the leisure centres in the local community, focusing on areas with the greatest need, supporting the ambitions in the Wandsworth Moves Together strategy.
Alton Renewal Plan
The Cabinet also agreed the next steps in the Alton Renewal Plan, which focuses on improving the area in response to feedback from residents and community organisations. Following close consultation with residents, the next stage includes a resident ballot to be held in the autumn on the council's proposals for new and affordable homes, a new retail parade, community facilities and outdoor spaces.
Over the last year, the council's investment in the Alton has delivered a new Roehampton Family Hub, new bus transport links, opened a new community safety touchdown hub and resurfaced roads and pavements. In May, the borough's flagship annual jobs fair was held in Whitelands College to bring employment and skills opportunities directly to Alton residents.
CCTV monitoring pilot
Wandsworth Council is investing in its live monitoring of the CCTV network. Cabinet made permanent the pilot scheme which funds officers to actively monitor the network, and has a Met Police officer working out of the control room to make the network as effective as possible. Extra provisions have also been made to target shoplifters during peak weekend hours.
