Another win for Wandsworth: £200k secured to resurface Garratt Lane
Published: Monday, June 30, 2025
Garratt Lane will benefit from a £200,000 investment from Transport for London (TfL), thanks to a successful bid from Wandsworth Council, a further boost to Wandsworth’s biggest road resurfacing programme in London.

This investment supports our ongoing Decade of Renewal pledge to maintain and improve the borough’s roads, pavements and infrastructure, with our record programme of investment this year, working to encourage more pride in our streets.
This is the second time in three years we’ve been successful in bidding for the maximum available amount of money from TfL, helping us to improve your roads and pavements, without costing residents a penny in Council Tax.
The £200,000 will be spent on resurfacing one of our busiest roads, Garratt Lane (A217), between Burntwood Lane and Summerstown, including the roundabout area.
Last year we invested Council funds in resurfacing a long stretch of Garratt Lane (from Bendon Valley to Algarve Road and from Sumerley Street to Burntwood Lane). With this additional funding we’ll have resurfaced almost 64% of the length of the road (2.7km out of 4.2km). Pavement repairs of Garratt Lane (Allfarthing Lane to Magdalen Road) have also been taking place this year.

This new funding comes from a limited pot, which is made available to all London boroughs through a competitive bidding process. The funds are specifically for the upkeep of principal A roads, known as the Borough Principal Road Network (BPRN). These roads carry high volumes of traffic and are essential for public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This is another important win for Wandsworth. With TfL funding limited and only awarded through a competitive process, we’ve done well to secure investment twice in three years. It means safer, smoother journeys for everyone using Garratt Lane, from drivers and bus passengers to cyclists and pedestrians.
“Our record-breaking programme of investment in our roads and pavements demonstrates our commitment to improving the borough’s infrastructure and encourage everyone to have pride in our streets.”
This is the second time in three years we’ve successfully bid for BPRN funding. In 2023/24, we used our £200k allocation to improve Tibbet’s Corner roundabout on the A219 including a section of Wimbledon Park Side (up to the Bus Stop near Oatlands Court). Sound financial management is at the heart of what we do, and by applying for external investment, we’re helping to keep money in our residents’ pockets.
We’re already assessing and preparing other principal roads across the borough in case more funding becomes available. If we secure more money, we’ll be ready to start resurfacing work as soon as possible.
