Putney Lower Common Cemetery, the first cemetery in Wandsworth to achieve Green Flag status

The borough has increased its total by three since last year, with Harroway Gardens, Huguenot Old Burial Ground and Putney Lower Common Cemetery all receiving the award for the first time. Putney Lower Common Cemetery is also the first cemetery in the borough to achieve Green Flag status.

The awards recognise parks and green spaces that are welcoming, accessible, environmentally sustainable and valued by local communities.

From major destinations such as Battersea Park and Tooting Common to smaller neighbourhood green spaces, the awards reflect the high quality of Wandsworth’s parks and the important role they play in supporting nature, health and wellbeing across the borough.

Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“Recognition in these national awards is testament to the quality of our parks and the time, care and attention our teams put into maintaining them, as well as the important role they play in daily life across our borough.

“Whether people are exercising, meeting friends, spending time with family or enjoying nature, Wandsworth’s parks provide welcoming spaces for everyone to enjoy.

“We’d like to thank the communities, volunteers and staff who help make these green spaces such valued places.”

Feedback for the new award-winners included praise for the rich biodiversity and heritage features of Huguenot Old Burial Ground, while Putney Lower Common Cemetery was also recognised for its biodiversity value. Harroway Gardens impressed following recent improvements that have enhanced play spaces, accessibility and biodiversity, shaped by resident feedback.

Retaining their Green Flag status for yet another year, King George's Park was commended for its extensive sports and play facilities and biodiversity measures including wildflower meadows, and Wandsworth Common was recognised for continuing to provide a well-managed and much-loved green space for both people and wildlife.
