The world-famous tennis tournament brings thousands of extra visitors through Wandsworth every summer, particularly in Southfields, as well as Earlsfield and Putney, presenting a challenge in keeping Wandsworth’s streets clean.
To manage the increased demand, the council is working with its street cleansing contractor Krinkels to provide enhanced services throughout the two-week event.
Additional crews, vehicles and extended operating hours will support regular services, with extra litter collections, increased bin capacity in key locations and dedicated teams deployed to busy hotspots.
A comprehensive clean-up took place ahead of the tournament, while cleansing operations will continue from early morning through to late evening each day.
As part of the improvements, three litter bins at Southfields Station have been upgraded from single to double units, increasing capacity to help cope with higher footfall, this change will be permanent.
Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment at Wandsworth Council said:
“The Wimbledon tennis tournament brings energy and visitors from across the world, many of which pass through Wandsworth on their way to the tournament.
“We want to ensure residents don’t feel inconvenienced by this international event and so our teams work hard to make sure the borough stays clean, with enhanced cleansing services and waste management to keep our streets tidy across the two weeks.
“We’re also acting on resident feedback to ensure streets are clean and welcoming year-round, for example through the alignment of street-cleaning and waste collection services set to be introduced later this year.”
Tony Oliveira, Contract Manager at Krinkels said:
“Our teams are on the ground before, during and after peak footfall, ensuring litter is cleared quickly and public spaces are maintained to a high standard. We work closely with the Council to ensure a coordinated effort throughout the tournament, so residents aren’t negatively impacted.”
The council will continue to monitor services throughout the tournament to ensure streets remain clean and any issues are dealt with quickly, as well as responding to resident feedback on services outside of the tournament as well.
Residents can report litter, overflowing bins and street cleaning issues through the Wandsworth Council website.
