Get ready to celebrate Sustainable September in Wandsworth

Get ready for a month celebrating sustainability initiatives as Sustainable September returns to the borough with a packed schedule of free activities for all. 

From green-themed festivals and community gardening sessions, to repair cafes, yard sales, recycling workshops and nature walks, there’s a host of inspiring events planned across Wandsworth. 

The month also encompasses Car Free Day on 22 September, with the council waiving fees for street parties held on the weekend of 19/20 September. 

Residents can apply to host a Car-Free Day street party by 4 September. 

The activity supports the council’s own green programme, which includes measures to protect and improve nature, biodiversity and air quality and create a cleaner, greener borough. 

In 2026, community events already planned include: 

• Beautify Balham litter pick – 5 September 
• Gardening at Coronation Gardens – 5 and 19 September 
• Work & Play Scrapstore open – 5 and 19 September 
• Paradise Cooperative harvest festival – 6 September 
• Local nature network event at Woodfield Pavilion – 6 September 
• Tours of Smugglers Way Recycling Centre – 8/9 September  
• River Wandle litter pick in King George’s Park with South East Rivers Trust – 11 September 
• Balham Green Fair at St Mary’s – 12 September 
• Transition Town Tooting mend and repair cafe – 12 September  
• Putney repair cafe – 12 September 
• Recycling Week inc free Smugglers Way webinars  – 14-18 September 
• Bat walk with Friends of Tooting Common – 13 September (date TBC) 
• Southfields Yard Sale Trail – 19-20 September 
• Saturday Spectacular at St Barnabas Clapham Common – 19 September 
• Southfields Harvest – 26 September 
• Restarters Southfields mend, fix and repair cafe – 26 September
