The route over Albert Bridge closed to motor traffic in February when Kensington and Chelsea Council's routine safety check identified a cast iron component had cracked at one of the bridge abutments.
The bridge has remained open to people walking or cycling over the river, and traffic diversions are in place via Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Bridge.
Wandsworth Council welcomed the news that works have now started on the northern side of the bridge, at water level.
A spokesperson said: "We welcome news that Kensington and Chelsea Council have started repair works today on Albert Bridge - Wandsworth residents living nearby or passing the area may see and hear construction works starting on the north side."
Kensington and Chelsea Council are planning to reopen the bridge to vehicle traffic in 2027.
Wandsworth Council remains in close contact with Kensington and Chelsea Council and TfL to keep residents informed and minimise disruption caused by the bridge closure to Wandsworth residents as much as possible.
Residents are advised to check for updates on Kensington and Chelsea Council’s website.
