Lighting up London: Wandsworth Bridge named finalist for Bridge Project of the Year
The Wandsworth Bridge Illumination Project has transformed a much-used river crossing into a celebrated local landmark. The scheme uses energy-efficient LED lighting and smart technology to enhance the bridge’s historic structure, adding year-round colour and vibrancy to the skyline.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We’re proud to see Wandsworth Bridge being recognised for its innovation and sustainability. This project shows how infrastructure can be both practical and beautiful and improve the look and feel of public space. We know how much pride residents take in their local area, and this project is a great example of that in action.”
Abyssinia Road shortlisted for Small Project of the Year
Meanwhile, the transformation of Abyssinia Road has been shortlisted in the ‘Small Project’ category, recognising the success of a council-led scheme that turned a temporary COVID-era road closure into a welcoming, permanent public space.
We’ve created a safer, more accessible street that supports al-fresco dining and local businesses. New paving and planting were introduced to make the area more attractive, and the road was also raised to create a shared surface.
Local feedback helped shape the project from day one, and the final result reflects what the community told us they needed.
Pride in our Streets
Both nominations reflect Wandsworth’s wider mission to invest in safe, inclusive and attractive public spaces that people feel proud of, shaped by the community – all part of our commitment to being a Listening Council.
Jenny Yates added:
“These nominations are national recognition of the kind of work we want to keep delivering – practical improvements that are shaped by residents, support local businesses and show pride in our streets.”
The winners will be announced at the Highways Awards ceremony on 23 September 2025. Stay tuned on our socials to find out more.
