Discussions: Councillor Jenny Yates (L) with Council Leader Simon Hogg and Will Norman (R)

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, and Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, were joined by Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner, and Helen Cansick, TfL’s Head of Healthy Streets Investment, to walk around the town centre and talk to residents about what changes they would like to see.

Wandsworth Council and TfL are now working together to develop viable options for the town centre and listening to local communities so we can renew the area for people living here and travelling around.

Jenny Yates said: “Wandsworth Town is a thriving town centre with a major road running through the middle. This does affect how people use the area, so we’d like to hear from residents and businesses about what would make this a better place to live and work. Together with TfL, we want to know how we can make it easier to move around the town centre so we can make improvements that work for everyone.”

Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner, said: “Creating safer, more welcoming streets is at the heart of our mission to make London a healthier, more liveable city. We have a real opportunity to work together to transform Wandsworth Town Centre into a place where walking and cycling are easier and more enjoyable. I encourage everyone to get involved and help shape the future of their area.”

London’s busy South Circular road is a key route, owned and managed by TfL, that runs through the centre of Wandsworth Town. The council has committed to working with TfL to examine options that could improve the town centre’s public transport, cycling, walking, accessibility and the public realm around the road, acting on feedback from local residents and businesses.

Ahead of further changes, the council is already working on a series of neighbourhood improvements including transforming Old York Road with new paving, planting and public space improvements, decluttering town centre pavements where there are obstructions, widening or improving footways by rotating bus shelters and improving lighting and the public realm along The Causeway. Planned Network Rail works for Wandsworth Town Station starting in 2026 will create a second entrance and step-free access.
