Six of the borough’s biggest and most loved parks and commons are among Britain’s best looked after and maintained, according to national environmental watchdog group Keep Britain Tidy.

The six open spaces have all been awarded a coveted Green Flag – confirming them as among the best managed green spaces in the country.

This year‘s list of winners has been joined by a new entry for the first time with Coronation Gardens in Southfields now also officially accredited.

This means that prestigious Green Flags now fly proudly over Battersea Park, Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common, Wandsworth Park and King George’s Park as well as Coronation Gardens.

The award is an internationally recognised quality mark for parks and green spaces and is awarded to open spaces that boast high environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and offer excellent visitor facilities.

The borough’s cabinet member for environment Cllr Judi Gasser said: “Wandsworth boasts some of the capital’s most popular and attractive green open spaces. They offer local people really beautiful and tranquil places to not only relax, unwind and meet friends in, but also to enjoy a huge range of sports, fitness and leisure activities.

“I’m delighted that six of our parks and commons have been honoured with these prestigious awards and so pleased that the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in looking after them has been recognised by the judges.”

Announcing the winners, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in these parks and commons in achieving a Green Flag Award.

“They are vital green spaces for the community in Wandsworth, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure they maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
