The theme this year is 'Bridging Generations', to encourage all of us to engage actively with the past - listen, learn and carry lessons forward.
Wandsworth Council is lighting up to support the nationwide Light the Darkness national moment for Holocaust Memorial Day. At 8pm residents are also invited to light a candle and place it in their window. You can watch a 10 minute countdown video at 7.50pm on the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust website.
Councillor Jeremy Ambache, Mayor of Wandsworth, said: “We are proud and humbled to join the national campaign to remember and learn from the Holocaust. This year’s theme is about ensuring that, as the horrors of the Holocaust move further into the past, future generations will continue to remember what happened and learn from it.
“We pride ourselves on being a strong, united community in Wandsworth. The world is still scared by hatred, discrimination and fear, and it is crucial that we all come together as one to reject and fight these evils.”
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place every year on 27 January the – anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the many Nazi death camps.
It was established in 2000 by representatives from around the world, who signed a declaration committing to preserve the memory of the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups and during more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
