Great Mental Health Day from Thrive LDN aims to get Londoners talking about mental health, highlight the support available and take the stigma out of asking for help. The theme this year is ‘everyday spaces’, celebrating the informal community spaces where connection happens and support begins.
There are a range of services in Wandsworth to support people with their mental health, including free and confidential talking therapies. Find out more about support for adults and children and young people.
This week we have published our new Public Mental Health Action Plan – Healthy Minds – which sets out how we will further prevent and support mental ill-health and create the conditions people need for wellbeing.
Healthy Minds is based on feedback from local people who said they need safe, healthy homes, social connections, stable employment, good education and a sense of culture and belonging. Good mental health is the result of a good environment, so we’re taking a holistic, preventative approach.
Our work includes:
-
Building 1,000 homes for social rent
-
Closer working with schools
-
Support to get jobs
-
Automatic enrolment for eligible people for benefits and free school meals
-
Access for All to make culture and fitness affordable for everyone
-
Safe, green and accessible streets, parks and public spaces
-
Wellbeing through art as part of our year as London Borough of Culture.
We’ll also work closely with the NHS to provide more community-based support to residents with mental health needs, to keep track of who is using services, and to make sure support is accessible to everyone who needs it.
Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care Graeme Henderson said: "We’re happy to support Great Mental Health Day. Mental ill-health touches many of our lives so talking about it and seeking support is crucial.
“Our new Healthy Minds Action Plan looks at how we as a council, working alongside our partners, can put the conditions in place to promote wellbeing and prevent mental ill-health. That’s why we’re making the borough safer, greener and fairer, building the homes that people need and encouraging a real sense of culture and community.”
