LGBT+ History Month is celebrated in February as an opportunity to reflect and highlight the history and culture of the LGBT+ community and the contributions of its members. It has been running for 22 years raising awareness and educating people about the past.
Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Culture, Kemi Akinola, said: “It’s so important that we recognise the contribution of queer history and culture on modern day arts and entertainment. There are lots of things to do around the borough and it is the perfect chance to try something new. The arts are an inclusive place and we want to highlight that.”

Our Libraries are a hub for learning, reading and connection as well as having a wide offering of culture, heritage and art events. Find out more about our Libraries First! Strategy.
Across February libraries all over the borough will host events celebrating LGBT+ History Month.
Mama G will be hosting bright and colourful sing and story time events, there will be a stories and themed craft session in Tooting Library and a LGBTQ+ Poetry Evening where you can share your poetry in the open mic session and hear from top diversity and inclusion poets.
London Borough of Culture Events
Wandsworth is the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture until March 2026.
As part of LGBT+ History Month there will be events going on around the borough focusing on the community’s rich culture and history.
All month, the Queer Wandsworth Exhibition will showcase fragments of lives through objects, photographs, film, recorded voices, print culture and archival material. From performance and drag traditions rooted in music hall culture, to Pride events, queer nightlife in the borough, activist campaigns and fundraising.
The House of Juicy Couture will be putting on workshops focused on vogueing and runway fundamentals as well as an open ballroom session and finally finishing up with a Kiki Ball held at The Clapham Grand.
Later on in the month a Wandsworth Green Plaque will be unveiled for activist Hanna Barrington and her artist husband Patrick. Hanna was a passionate supporter of LGBT+ rights and took in lodgers through the LGBT+ telephone helpline Gay Switchboard. It's an opportunity to learn more about the remarkable couple.
