Breaches have included leaving unwanted furniture such as mattresses and chairs on the side of a residential street, to dumping rubble and building waste on a back street, and industrial waste in a car park.
Our enforcement officers have the power to issue £1,000 on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for small scale fly-tipping.
Large scale fly-tipping can be punished in the Magistrate’s Court with a £50,000 fine, and/or a 12 month prison sentence. Offenders convicted of large scale fly-tipping in a Crown Court can face an unlimited fine, and/or a five year prison sentence.
Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are serious about tackling illegal fly-tipping in Wandsworth. I’m pleased to see that our diligent enforcement teams, which we have re-enforced with additional staff, have identified culprits and issued FPNs in a swift manner.”
“As part of our Cleaner Borough Plan, we have listened to local residents and increased CCTV monitoring in hotspot areas to catch fly-tippers red-handed and work to make Wandsworth a cleaner and more pleasant place to live.”
This enhanced enforcement approach comes as part of Wandsworth’s Cleaner Borough Plan and is paired with a commitment to retain weekly waste and recycling collections, expand much-loved Mega Skip Days and deliver cleaner streets.
More than 6,500 tonnes of extra recycling has been collected in less than a year thanks to residents’ hard work and the Cleaner Borough Plan, equivalent to 400 double-decker buses.
The improvements have generated cost savings of £1.3 million, which will be reinvested to make streets cleaner. Fly-tipping is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and those caught can be issued with Fixed Penalty Notices or in very serious cases prosecuted.
Our Joint Control Centre at Wandsworth Town Hall monitors a network of 1,200 CCTV cameras across the borough. It was recently announced that additional funding has been agreed to significantly boost the borough’s CCTV monitoring capabilities, with extended monitoring hours and brand new mobile CCTV vans which will strengthen community safety.
