Repair work has begun to fix Battersea Park’s Grade II listed Albert Gate after a large lorry struck it when entering the park last week, causing the complete collapse of the supporting stonework and gate.

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “The Albert Gate was damaged in an accidental collision which thankfully didn’t result in any injuries.

“We will be taking action to ensure that those responsible cover the costs of repair in full, at no cost to local taxpayers.

“We know how much residents love Battersea Park and we are working hard to make sure the stonework is repaired and the iconic Albert Gate reopened as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, people can use one of the other entrances to continue to enjoy the park, although the gate will remain open for vehicle access.”

The area is now clear, and all the stones have been moved and stored for their protection. Fencing and hoarding has been erected around the area to keep pedestrians and vehicles safe while works are carried out.

Repair work has already started. The external pathway repairs are expected to be completed this week, and the gate and stonework as soon as possible afterwards.

As this is a specialised Grade II listed heritage site, all work will need to be handled carefully and approved accordingly.

Whilst these works are ongoing, there will be no impact to vehicles accessing this gate. However, during this period, the entrance will remain closed to pedestrians. The closest available pedestrian entrances are Albert Bridge and Petworth Gates.

Wandsworth is proud to host some of the best parks, commons and open spaces in London, with 12 parks having a prestigious Green Flag award, recognising their high standards, biodiversity, and value to the community. The council also recently welcomed the brand new 32-acre Springfield Park in the heart of Tooting, the largest new park to be created in the capital since the 2012 Olympic Games.

The borough’s parks are perfect for people looking to keep fit or move more, offering a range of opportunities for sport and physical activity. Last year, the council launched Battersea parkrun in Battersea Park which has already attracted over 22,000 participants and is a course which has been run over 38,000 times, proving just how popular this is with local people.
