A new ‘Safe Space’ has been launched outside Starbucks at Clapham Junction Station providing a place for people to go if they feel vulnerable.

Launched on Friday 28 July, it will run every Friday night from 9pm to 1am. If successful, it could be extended to Saturday nights.

Officers from the Council working in partnership with Wandsworth Police, British Transport Police and volunteers will be on hand to give help and advice, as well as personal alarms and free kits to prevent drink spiking.

Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health and Community Safety said: “We are delivering on our commitment to extend our approach to addressing violence against women and girls to also address the safety of women and girls in public spaces.

"This partnership initiative will not only provide a safe space for women and girls late into the evening but anyone else who is feeling vulnerable and needs assistance. We extend our gratitude to our partners and especially members of the community who are giving up their Friday nights to volunteer and support this initiative with us.”

Detective Chief Inspector Clair Kelland, policing Commander for south-west London said: “We are pleased to be supporting this scheme.

"Having a visible presence and engaging with our communities is a priority for us. Clapham Junction can get very busy on Friday nights so we want everyone to feel safe and have somewhere they can go to if they need assistance.

"It may be you feel vulnerable while waiting for a bus, train or cab, or your phone has run out of charge. You may be at real risk or need to report a crime to the police, or perhaps you just need to chat to someone friendly. My officers will be at hand to offer this support and advise alongside our partners.”
