Alton Activity Centre
The Alton Activity Centre is a cherished community resource in Roehampton; now set to receive a comprehensive upgrade under the Alton Early Improvement Plan.
This revitalisation aims to create a play area that is accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for residents of all ages and abilities.
A place for all ages
The redesign focuses on delivering an engaging and multi-functional space. The key features include:
- Age-specific zones: Dedicated areas for various age groups, such as a secure under-5s play zone and an exciting youth area with a half Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and skateboarding features
- Inclusive play equipment: Up-to-date features that accommodate children with diverse abilities, ensuring an inclusive environment
- Creative and restful spaces: New elements like art and craft areas, sensory gardens, and covered seating for relaxation and supervision
- Improved access: Pathways redesigned for ease of movement and reduced fencing to foster an open and inviting atmosphere.
Designed with community input
Community involvement has been central to the planning process. Feedback from workshops and consultations, particularly with young residents, has driven the inclusion of performance spaces, creative zones, and other features.
Safety enhancements, including better lighting and clear signage, are key priorities. The centre’s sustainable design incorporates climate-resilient plants and permeable surfaces to improve environmental management.
A space to connect and thrive
Beyond being a play area, the upgraded Alton Activity Centre will serve as a community gathering spot. With open hours and versatile spaces, it will host family activities, workshops, and events. This transformation is set to strengthen the community spirit and promote wellbeing for all residents.
Timeframe for development
The plans for enhancements to the play facilities at Alton Activity Centre received unanimous approval at the Planning Applications Committee on 20 June 2024. This marked a major first stage in the delivery of the Alton Renewal Plan.
Works commenced on site in November 2025 for the delivery of the new Alton Activity Centre. Our contractor, Elite, is carrying out the works in phases, with completion expected in late 2026.
What’s happening now
Existing play spaces have been removed to prepare the site for infrastructure installation.

Over the coming months, residents can expect to see the following key milestones:
- Installation of drainage and utilities infrastructure
- Groundworks and site preparation for the new Alton Activity Centre plays pace
- Construction of new inclusive play facilities, with modern, accessible equipment designed in response to local feedback from community groups and our Youth Advisory Panel
