Temporary accommodation fact sheet: what you need to know
Temporary accommodation is only provided in limited and exceptional situations, when it is determined that your household have a priority need within the context of the law.
If you are single, have no children, and do not have serious medical needs, it is very unlikely that you will be offered temporary accommodation.
Temporary accommodation does not guarantee a council home
Staying in temporary accommodation (TA) does not guarantee an offer of social housing. Wandsworth faces a severe housing shortage, with demand far exceeding supply.
Temporary accommodation may not be in the local area
Whilst we try to keep people as close to their local area as possible, temporary accommodation in the borough is extremely limited, and it is not always possible to offer a placement in Wandsworth. This means many households are likely to be placed outside the borough, sometimes further away than expected.
The type and size of accommodation depend on what is available
Temporary accommodation is allocated based on what the council believes is suitable for you and your family's needs and what is available on the day of your homelessness.
It is based on suitability requirements - not on choice or preference.
We will ensure that all your suitability needs are taken into consideration when making an offer. You may be placed in a hotel, shared facility, or a smaller unit than your permanent housing entitlement.
Refusing an offer may affect the help you receive
If you refuse a suitable offer of temporary accommodation, the Council may not make further offers to you and your family.
However, the Council will continue to investigate your homelessness application.
It is important to speak to your Housing Officer before refusing temporary accommodation so your needs can be assessed and you fully understand the implications.
Temporary accommodation can last a long time
Households remain in temporary accommodation for many years - far longer than most tenancy agreements. Housing shortages and increasing demand mean you may wait a long time for a viable housing solution. There is no set timeframe for when someone will move on.
