PSHE and RSE
Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.
Relationships and sex education (RSE) forms a statutory part of PSHE education.
RSHE within PSHE
Although some parts of PSHE are non-statutory, all schools should teach it. The subject supports pupils' personal development and wellbeing, which is recognised as a distinct criterion within the 2025 Ofsted inspection framework. School leaders can use the State Funded Inspection toolkit to self-evaluate their personal development and wellbeing provision to drive continuous development.
The Department for Education published revised statutory guidance on Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education in July 2025, to be implemented from September 2026. Wandsworth Council, in partnership with Richmond and Kingston Councils have created a toolkit, ‘RSHE Guidelines 2026 Updated and Unpacked’ to guide schools in their implementation of the revised statutory guidance. The toolkit strengthens collective duty to safeguard and empower pupils. High quality, developmentally appropriate RSHE is a core component of an effective, modern curriculum that supports pupils to navigate real life challenges safely and responsibly.
