Alton Arts Hub relaunch

The Alton Arts Hub has had a makeover, and we are very excited to invite you to our relaunch.

Gone is the luminous green toilet and tired looking interior. In its place are freshly painted walls, new flooring, a fancy toilet, and a homely feel. Alongside our regular programme of activities, we hope the space will be used by the community to host events, meetings and shows.

We are opening our doors and hope you will be able to drop in and join us for one of our activities and enjoy some refreshments.

On the day you will be able to sign up for the forthcoming free Re:Create workshops which will teach you how to make gonks, weave baskets from old magazines, learn papier-mache skills and decorate plant pots. All classes will use recycled or upcycled materials and are suitable for anyone aged 10 + (due to needles and scissors).

You can also become part of our ‘ALTON’ collage. We will be taking thermal images of our guests and using the images to create the letters to spell out Alton. Thermal imaging doesn’t use ink so is better for the environment.

There will be wool and ribbon available, so you can create a small woven mat to take home. You can also make a decorative lamp.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Brighten your World with a Seed Explosion!

We are running a free seed bomb making, decorating and planting workshop for all the family. The seed bombs will be planted in the tree pits along Harbridge Avenue. Once you've made, decorated and planted your seed bomb, you can also make personalised plant markers so that you can keep an eye on the seeds you planted and watch them grow.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday 2 June from 11.30am to 12.30pm, on the paved area between blocks 2-32 & 34-84 on Harbridge Avenue.

Sowing wildflowers provides vital resources to support a wide range of insects that couldn't otherwise survive in urban or built-up areas. Making, decorating and digging ‘seed bombs’ into areas of your estate that need a little brightening up is a perfect way of spending some time in the half term holiday!

Witley Point Graffiti Mural

The Regeneration Team commissioned local art organisation, Estate Art, to complete a graffiti mural on the wall of the Multi Use Games Area at Witley Point.

The abstract block-shaped design was suggested by young users of the newly refurbished games area, and the colour scheme was inspired by the colours of the surrounding play equipment.

Community Engagement Strategy

The Alton Regeneration Team have launched their Community Engagement Strategy which sets out how they will ensure the best possible engagement with residents and stakeholders affected by the Alton Regeneration. The strategy was developed in collaboration with stakeholders from the Alton community.

Christmas 2020 on the Alton

The Alton Regeneration Team, in collaboration with the Economic Development Office, installed the Alton Estate's first Christmas tree. The 20ft evergreen conifer was locally sourced and situated at the junction between Danebury Avenue and Holyborne Avenue for five weeks, after which it was donated to Roehampton Community Shed to be recycled in woodwork projects with the local community.

The tree's lights were switched on by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper, and local resident and founder of Estate Art, Lynne Capocciama.

During December, the Regeneration Team also hosted virtual craft sessions with local schools and youth groups to create paper chain decorations. Each strip was decorated to depict a mood, a feeling, an experience or a hope, and measured two metres in length to represent the recommended social distance. They symbolised unity and connecting with others during 2020. The team also supported Estate Art to carry out cube decoration workshops with local schools and families on the Alton Estate. The finished decorations were displayed in local shops and Roehampton Library for the community's enjoyment.

The Regeneration Team also worked with local people from the Alton Estate to put together a 2020 version of the 12 days of Christmas. The short film also features a clip of the Mayor switching on the lights on the first Alton Christmas tree.

Witley Point MUGA Opening

On 16 October 2020, The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper, opened the newly refurbished Multi Use Games Area at Witley Point as part of the Alton regeneration.

Children from Heathmere School, who previously took part in the engagement sessions to design the new facility, were invited to a socially distanced opening event where they tried the new play equipment (including a resurfaced pitch, slides, climbing walls and a trampoline) and participated in activities including mural painting, daffodil planting and the construction of a bug hotel to encourage wildlife.

Revised Alton Planning Application

The statutory consultation on the revisions to the Alton Regeneration planning application went live on 25 May 2020.

Full details of the revised application, including drawings and documents, are available to view online at Search planning applications and by entering the reference number: 2019/2516.

Roehampton Christmas Festival 2019

The Regeneration Team hosted the event at the Minstead Gardens Methodist Church, and featured decorations made by local children, music by World Heartbeat Music Academy, songs by local schools and carols by the Minstead Gardens choir (An A-Choired Taste).

There were also plenty of free festive snacks and hot drinks, as well as crafts and games for the whole family.

Roehampton Festival 2019

Over 1,000 residents attended the festival which featured music, dancing, fair rides, street food, sports and a city farm. Community organisations and voluntary groups also took the opportunity to publicise a range of local services including cookery classes, fitness sessions, healthy living and employment opportunities.

The festival also featured the return of the Kings & Queens banquet. Older residents were treated to a three-course meal and a variety show while they were waited on hand-and-foot by volunteers from the Hillsong Church. The banquet has been provided for more than ten years by Regenerate RISE, a local charity which provides support to the isolated elderly.

Residents were able to find out about the regeneration proposals for the Alton estate and to ask representatives from the council and from Redrow questions about the new homes, phasing programme and opportunities for employment during construction.

We would like to thank Regenerate, Regenerate RISE, Hillsong Church, Enable, Roehampton University, the Roehampton Club and Redrow Homes for their generous support.

For further information on the scheme, please visit the Alton Regeneration website, email the Regeneration team or call 020 8871 6207.

Consultations

Consultation activity and drop in events.

August 2019 drop-in - Fontley Way

Following two consultation events in March, the regeneration team held a drop-in event to inform residents about changes to the proposals and to address any concerns. Changes include:

  1. Play: following feedback from residents and discussions with planners it is proposed that the play area at Ibsley Gardens will be refurbished and improved rather than providing a new play area on Fontley Way.
  2. Gardens: it is proposed that part of the private communal garden is converted into private gardens for ground floor maisonettes.
  3. Construction Traffic: it is proposed that construction traffic enter the Fontley Way site via the existing entrance between Kimpton House and Crondall House. This will result in the temporary suspension of fourteen parking bays in front of Crondall House during construction, and options for alternative parking arrangements were presented at the drop-in event (see information boards).
  4. Demolition: it is proposed that the demolition of the existing structure on the site will take place during the Autumn half term rather than during the summer holidays.

If you have any questions please contact the Regeneration Team at roehampton@wandsworth.gov.uk or on 020 8871 6207.

You can also download a copy of the information boards.

June 2019 consultation - Witley Point Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)

As part of a new model for youth services in Roehampton the council will be making a range of improvements to the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) next to Witley Point. Following discussions with a range of stakeholders including Children’s Services, local schools and community groups, council officers have developed a design brief and preliminary designs which includes: paving, fencing, planting, flood lighting, and the introduction of play equipment for younger children.

Council officers held a consultation event on the MUGA on March Tuesday 4 June between 5 and 8pm.

If you have any questions please contact the Regeneration Team at roehampton@wandsworth.gov.uk, or on 020 8871 6207.

You can also download a copy of the MUGA consultation board.

March 2019 consultation - Manresa Clubroom, Fontley Way

A key aim of the Alton estate regeneration is to ensure council tenants and resident homeowners are able to move directly into a newly built replacement home. As part of this commitment, the Council is proposing to build 14 new family homes at Fontley Way (on the site of the former One O'clock Club).

In order to discuss the proposals with residents, we held two consultation events at the Manresa Clubroom (Fontley Way, SW15 4LY). These took place on:

  • Thursday 14 March, from 5 to 8pm
  • Saturday 16 March, from 10am to 1pm

If you have any questions please contact the Regeneration Team at Roehampton@wandsworth.gov.uk, or on 020 8871 6207. You can also download a copy of the Fontley Way Consultation boards.

November 2018 consultation - Alton Activity Centre

The Alton regeneration will integrate 'doorstep play' across the estate and there will be major improvements to the three core play and amenity spaces. This includes Alton Activity Centre which will be redesigned to provide recreational space for all ages and abilities.

The improvements to the Alton Activity Centre will open the area to provide space for older children to play whilst maintaining the amount of managed play space for younger children. A new multi-use games area (MUGA) will also be provided and will be accessible to all members of the public.

On Thursday 22 November, the regeneration team and Redrow held a drop-in session at the Alton Activity Centre. If you were unable to attend this session, you can download the boards from the Alton Activity Centre.

November 2018 consultation – Bus Turnaround

One of the many proposed improvements to access and movement across the Alton estate is the relocation of the bus turnaround from Portswood Place to the area in front of Shalden House. This will conserve the historic parkland setting of Downshire Field, improve pedestrian movement along Danebury Avenue, and ease traffic flow through the estate and bring buses further into the estate.

The new turnaround will provide space for up to four buses to wait and an additional 'running lane' to allow buses to pass safely. A new bus stop will also be created at Tunworth Crescent, and improved landscaping and screening will soften the interface between the new bus turnaround and Shaldon House.

On Tuesday 20 November, the regeneration team and Redrow held a drop-in session at the Minstead Gardens Club Room. If you were not able to attend this event, you can download a copy of the Bus Turnaround Session exhibition boards.

Get Active Roehampton Festival - September 2018

This summer Wandsworth Council paired up with Enable Leisure and Culture, supported by Redrow Homes to promote a get active community fun filled family day, whilst providing the opportunity to see the latest proposals for the Alton Estate Regeneration.

Hundreds of residents turned out in the blazing sunshine for an action-packed afternoon of live music, sports activities and interactive games. A variety of organisations and local groups managed stalls which offered an assortment of knowledge as well as creativity opportunities including tote bag printing, graffiti art and face painting. All inflatables and children’s rides present were provided for free over the course of the day.

Visitors inside the Redrow tepee had the opportunity to view the latest regeneration proposals, speak to the design team and regeneration team members, and grab a much-needed, cooling frozen yoghurt.

A planning application is due to be submitted later this year, comprising of an outline planning proposal of the full masterplan and detail plans for the first phase.

For further information on the scheme, please visit the Alton Regeneration website, email the Regeneration team or call 020 8871 6207.
