About the School Streets scheme

A School Street is where one or more roads (or a part of a road) near a school entrance temporarily close to motor traffic at the beginning and end of the school day. A School Street creates a pedestrian and cycle only zone.

School Streets are designed to reduce the number of vehicles around the school. We believe that School Streets will:

  • Reduce congestion and vehicles travelling through the School Street
  • Reduce pollution around the school entrance with fewer engines idling
  • Encourage more walking, cycling and active journeys from pupils and parents/carers
  • Result in less inconsiderate parking and dangerous manoeuvres
  • Create a calmer, safer and cleaner environment

If supported, we will launch School Street trials under an experimental traffic order. Consultations will reopen for 6 months allowing representation to be made while the scheme is live.

The School Streets will be monitored and reported to the Transport Committee and a decision will be made on whether to make the School Street permanent, remove it or make amendments.

We are also finalising proposals for school street schemes serving All Saints’ CE Primary, Belleville Primary (Meteor site) and Swaffield Primary and hoping to take these out to formal consultations later this Spring.

Plans for schemes to serve Oasis Academy and Hornsby House School are currently suspended.
