Wandsworth Council opens the door to home ownership
Published: Friday, October 4, 2019
The council’s dedicated Home Ownership Team is hosting the Annual Affordable Housing Open Day on Thursday October 17, 2019 from 2pm to 8pm in the Civic Suite in Wandsworth High Street. Last year, over 1000 Wandsworth residents and workers in the borough attended the event to find out what home ownership opportunities are available.
On the day there will be local housing associations, financial advisors and solicitors offering help and advice to first time buyers living or working in Wandsworth to find their way around the different home ownership options and opportunities available to residents and workers. This includes shared ownership, right to buy, right to part buy and the house purchase grant.
Many of the new affordable homes being built in Wandsworth can be purchased on shared ownership terms by local buyers who live or work in the borough and are registered with the Homeownership Team. Local housing providers and Independent financial and legal advisors will be on hand to give personal advice on mortgages and the buying process for those taking their first steps onto the property ladder.
The council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Kim Caddy, said: “Helping residents meet their housing needs and aspirations is at the heart of our Housing Strategy. We are committed to delivering over 1,000 new council homes, with 60 per cent available at discounted rates to rent or buy and market housing targeted to local buyers committed to owning and occupying."
Paul Martin, the council’s chief executive, is fully in support of the event and added: “I would particularly encourage the council’s staff to attend and see what local housing opportunities might be available to them. There are some excellent examples of our staff and indeed other key workers securing local housing in the shared ownership sector as an alternative to renting or commuting in from further afield. Come and see what opportunities are available.
"We know that there are many different housing schemes around and it can be difficult to know where to start, so come along to the open door event for free, impartial advice on your options to own your own home.”
