The Town Centre Investment Fund will be used for projects in areas such as Mitcham Road in Tooting, Amen Corner, Totterdown Street and Balham.

It aims to tackle long-standing issues such as clutter and traffic flow, as well as making areas more pleasant for pedestrians, including creating break out spaces and public realm improvements.

Now, subject to approval by a full meeting of the council on March 9, the council’s new High Streets and Local Growth team will start working with partners including local residents, business Improvement Districts and business associations to look at what’s needed and come up with plans. The £5m funding will be available for projects over the next two financial years.

Cabinet member for economic development, skills and employment, Cllr Rhodri Morgan (pictured right), said: “I am delighted that members of the council’s executive agreed this £5m fund which will enable us to bring forward long-term improvements to our high streets and town centres in the south of the borough.

“This will bring benefits for local people as well as for the many shops, restaurants and other businesses in this busy and vibrant part of Wandsworth.

“Now we will speak to as many local people, businesses and other stakeholders as we can to come up with a clear picture of what we need to do, develop feasible schemes and set out how we will deliver them.”
