The council’s mammoth Christmas tree recycling scheme is now largely complete but residents whose trees remain uncollected are being urged to contact the town hall to arrange a pick-up.

Since it began its free Christmas tree recycling service on January 4, the council has collected nearly 170 tonnes of trees from people’s doorsteps.

The borough’s waste contractor will continue to routinely collect trees that may have so far been missed, but if residents need them removed from front gardens urgently or have seen trees blocking pavements or street corners they can report them via the council’s website.

Wandsworth’s environment spokesman Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “We’d like to thank our residents who have shown great patience and understanding this year as we work hard to complete this huge task.

“It has taken us slightly longer than normal this year because of covid and the impact this has had on our collection teams. I’d also like to thank and pay tribute to our contractor and its staff who have been working flat out to cover for missing colleagues to get the job done. They have really risen to the challenge and should be applauded for working in very difficult circumstances.”

All the trees that are collected are shredded and turned into compost.
