In response to a petition received from local people asking for action to curb local traffic levels, the council is launching a public consultation into a trial scheme designed to improve conditions for residents in Duntshill Road and Penwith Road.

The proposal is for a pilot system of one-way workings from their junctions with Garratt Lane.

The proposed trial would be for one-way only westbound on Penwith Road between Garratt Lane and the Strathville Road/Ravensbury Terrace junction and one-way southbound on Duntshill Road from Garratt Lane.

If implemented following the consultation, these combined measures would avoid displacing traffic onto adjacent roads and help address residents’ concerns about the existing two way operation in Duntshill Road.

Drivers living in the area would continue to enjoy access to their homes from both Garratt Lane and Merton Road, but vehicular exit would only be possible via Merton Road.

Transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said: “Local residents have asked us to take action here to limit the impact of through traffic, especially on Duntshill Road which isn’t really suitable for two-way traffic and is often the scene of blockages by cars and vans unable to pass each other.

“We think our proposals are proportionate and would resolve this problem without channelling traffic onto nearby residential streets. But before introducing this pilot scheme we need to listen to what local people think and find out if they support these measures. We won’t be introducing any changes until we see the results of the public consultation.

“If this trial scheme does proceed we will of course inform local residents in writing beforehand.”
