Ban on heavier lorries travelling along Battersea Church Road

From Tuesday, March 1, vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will not be permitted to use this riverside road in Battersea.

The council has set a 7.5 tonne weight restriction in the road following the implementation of a package of measures to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

These measures were introduced following appeals for action from local residents and included new zebra crossings, speed cushions and raised tables at junctions, designed to curb excessive vehicle speeds and improve safety levels for pedestrians and cyclists.

The council’s transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said: “The message came loud and clear from local people that they wanted this road to be safer.

“Following detailed consultation we have already brought in a number of safety measures, and are now introducing a weight restriction that will ban heavy lorries from thundering past people’s homes. It will make Battersea Church Road a much quieter and safer environment for local people on foot and travelling by bike.”

Funding for these safety measures has been provided by the borough’s Neighbourhood CIL fund which is made up of cash levied from housing developers to fund local community infrastructure projects.
