New community website aims to ‘Beautify Balham’

A new community website that promotes cleaner and greener neighbourhoods in Balham has now gone live.
The Beautify Balham website calls on local residents and businesses to become “actively responsible for their shared outdoor environment through tree planting, gardening, litter picking and campaigning for a greener, cleaner and more beautiful Balham”.
The initiative, which is supported by the council through grant funding, organises regular litter picks around Balham and is calling for the planting of an avenue of trees along Balham High Road.
It is also embarking on a project to plant flowers and other greenery at the base of street trees to brighten up the area and also deter dog fouling and flytipping.
And it’s behind the first ever Balham in Bloom competition which invites residents and businesses to take part in “the beautification of Balham through living floral displays”. The first of these annual events will be held in June and entries in a range of categories are now open.
The council’s environment spokesman Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “This is a great grassroots initiative that aims to make Balham a cleaner, greener and better place to live.
“We absolutely welcome community organisations that are dedicated to improving the local environment and delivering tangible benefits for residents and businesses.”
Beautify Balham volunteers meet each month for litter picks. To join them, check the website before meeting in Bedford Hill Place at the rear of Sainsbury’s at 11am on the first Saturday of the month.
