Council launches ‘Summer Unlocked 2020’ Programme

The council, working together with young people, has launched an innovative, action-packed summer programme.
'Summer Unlocked’ offers children and young people of all ages the opportunity to get involved in activities such as horse riding and kayaking, get access to extra tuition, learn new skills such as t-shirt design and plenty more.
‘Summer Unlocked’ is now underway and will take place over the summer holidays. The programme offers a range of interactive, fun, socially distanced events for children, young people and families.
Cllr Will Sweet, cabinet member for children’s services and education said: “We are thrilled to be launching a summer programme for children and young people who have had one of their most challenging summers to date.
“It was really important that we worked in collaboration with young people on this programme to make sure that we produced an itinerary of choice that would be as engaging and beneficial as possible.”
“Keeping in line with government restrictions, we have taken every precaution possible to make ‘Summer Unlocked’ as enjoyable and as safe as possible. This year, we are prioritising vulnerable members of the community space in the programme first to ensure that those who would benefit most are able to participate.”
“Community safety will always remain a top priority for the council and we hope to increase access to the activities on offer if restrictions are lifted.”
He added: “We hope that everyone who is able to participate enjoys our ‘Summer Unlocked’ programme and we thank all the young people that helped to make this year’s programme happen.”
The council is asking community organisations (such as schools and youth clubs), in the first instance, to refer up to 10 young people they feel would most benefit and engage with the activities offered. The programme organisers within the council will then contact the parent/carers/guardians to book young people and families onto activities if they would like to participate.
