Tooting residents could enjoy an improved local green space
Published: 19 October 2018
Residents in Tooting are being asked for their views on plans to improve a green open space that could soon have play equipment installed for younger children.
A consultation is asking local people what they think of the Fishponds playing fields and what could be done to increase its popularity with local families.
One of the measures being considered is the installation of natural play equipment for younger residents.
If approved, this equipment would not encroach onto the existing sports pitches which would remain available for use by local schools and sports clubs. The playing fields would also remain a dog free zone.
People can also suggest other sports and activities they would like to see staged there.
Normally the playing fields, which are bordered by Fishponds Road, Hebdon Road and Broadwater Road, are only accessible to sports clubs that have made a pitch booking.
Following requests from people living in the area, the council opened up the playing fields for a trial period last year so that local people could use it more extensively over the summer months.
The success of that initiative has now persuaded council chiefs to look at how best to utilise the space.
The council’s environment spokesman Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “This green space could provide a much better local amenity for people living nearby.
“We are very lucky to have so many parks, commons and green spaces in Wandsworth and its great they are used and enjoyed by so many local people.
“If we can make these playing fields more attractive to local people, perhaps by installing play equipment, and encouraging greater use as anopen space then I’m sure that would be welcomed by people living in this part of Tooting.”
