Upgrade for Battersea Park sports pitch

Published: 28 September 2018

Sports fans can now enjoy upgraded facilities at the Battersea Park Millennium Arena following a £100k sports pitch replacement.

The area is one of the borough’s premier sports facilities with an eight lane running track catering for a full range of track and field disciplines, plus a fitness centre, 19 floodlit tennis courts and two multi-purpose all-weather pitches.

The other pitch was upgraded two years ago, and the most recent work means the site now has two state-of-the-art artificial pitches suitable for hockey, football and tennis. The Millenium Arena is managed on behalf of the council by Enable Leisure and Culture.

The council’s spokesman for community services and open spaces, Cllr Steffi Sutters, said: “These Millennium Arena pitches are heavily used by tennis players in the summer and five-a-side in the winter and are a vital facility for local schools.

“This court was looking rather tired, but now it has a specialist sports surface able to cope with the high level of demand. It will be available for all the community to use all year round for years to come.”

This summer Wandsworth has benefited from several revamped and new sports facilities.

The sports court on the Savona Estate has been refurbished by Careys Civil Engineering in partnership with Battersea Power Station and  Powerleague has opened one of London’s most innovative football pitches at New Covent Garden Market which will include free use by local schools and community groups.

The Barn Elms leisure and fitness complex is getting a new pavilion, and funding has been secured for a new 3G all-weather pitch in Falcon Park. On Wandsworth Common the ball games area has had a £130,000 upgrade and a £180,000 drainage scheme has been carried out to stop the football pitches getting waterlogged.
